On August 10，2019，China's first outbreak of lumpy skin disease（LSD）was confirmed in Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang. In order to find out all possible sources and potential risks of the disease，and to put forward specific suggestions，an epidemiological investigation was carried out in the field. It was found that infected animals were distributed in 17 towns in Chabuchar County，Yining City and Huocheng County，with the incidence rate of 17.0% to 36.2% and the mortality of 0.8%. It was analyzed that the outbreak was probably caused by hematophagous insects carrying viruses from Hongnahai Trench that was on the border between China and Kazakhstan；and the risk of disease spreading along the valley was high with the movement of infected cattle and blood-sucking insects in alpine pasture in summer. So it was suggested to carry out serological surveillance in valley regions of Ili valley area，to collect bovine serum in areas at high risk to carry out antibody detection，and to develop the optimal method for immunization followed by clinical examination.
