In recent years,through the implementation of eradication plan for foot and mouth disease(FMD),South American countries almost have controlled and eradicated FMD. In this paper,the previous FMD prevalence status in Brazil,Colombia,Ecuador and Bolivia were introduced. Under the coordination of Pan American Health Organization and Pan American FMD Center,South American countries have achieved good results by a series of measures,including establishing national FMD eradication plan,implementing scientific and effective immunization project,establishing a sound system for animal moving control and tracing,carrying out risk-based surveillance and epidemiological investigation,as well as applying for FMD free zone certification issued by World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) timely. In conclusion,scientific prevention and control,multi-cooperation and timely assessment and adjustment were very important for FMD eradication.
