In order to investigate the source and destination of live sheep and their products introduced into Loudi City,Hunan Province, the market chain during 2018 to 2021 was investigated via legal means. The results showed that a total of 637 batches of 45 764 live sheep were introduced into Loudi, including 248 batches of 30 591 sheep from other provinces, involving 17 provinces(autonomous regions or municipalities),in which,7 were listed as brucellosis class I regions;14.3% introduced sheep were for feeding again, and others were for slaughter. A total of 1 430 batches and 1 460.4 tons of sheep products were introduced, most of which were from other provinces(1 411 batches of 1 451.6 tons),involving 17 provinces(autonomous regions),in which,14 were brucellosis class I regions;mutton was in the majority, accounting for 98.0%. Live sheep and their products were introduced depending on different seasons, which rapidly increased in quantity and batches since August or September every year and peaked in January next year. In conclusion, live sheep and their products were largely introduced into Loudi, mainly from other provinces, some of them from brucellosis class I regions, and a small number of live sheep were for feeding, which brought non-negligible entry risk of major animal diseases. Therefore,it was recommended to strengthen quarantine for live sheep and their products at the place of origin, especially in the areas where animal diseases were prevalent, and strengthen control over the circulation of live sheep and their products in autumns and winters to reduce potential entry risk of major animal diseases including peste des petits ruminants(PPR)and sheep brucellosis.
